Extend Your Study Permit

Extending your study permit in Canada allows you to continue your studies beyond the expiration date of your current permit. Here’s how to extend your study permit in Canada:
  1. Eligibility:
    • To be eligible for a study permit extension, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada and have maintained satisfactory academic status.
    • You must also ensure that your passport remains valid for the duration of your extended stay in Canada.
  2. Application Process:
    • Apply for a study permit extension online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website or by paper application if you’re not eligible to apply online.
    • Complete the appropriate application form, provide biographical information, and pay the application fee. You may also need to submit supporting documents, such as a letter of enrollment from your DLI, proof of financial support, and a copy of your current study permit.
  3. Timing:
    • Apply for a study permit extension well before your current permit expires. IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before your permit expires to allow for processing time.
    • If your study permit expires while you’re waiting for a decision on your extension application, you can continue studying in Canada under the conditions of your expired permit until a decision is made on your extension.
  4. Maintain Status: While your study permit extension application is being processed, you must continue to meet the conditions of your current permit, including remaining enrolled as a full-time student and refraining from engaging in unauthorized work.
  5. Biometrics: Depending on your country of nationality or residence, you may need to provide biometric information (fingerprints and a photo) as part of your study permit extension application. Check the IRCC website for biometric requirements and instructions.
  6. Decision:
    • After submitting your study permit extension application, you’ll receive a confirmation of receipt from IRCC. Processing times vary, but you can check the status of your application online using your unique application number.
    • If your extension is approved, you’ll receive a new study permit with an updated expiration date. If your application is denied, IRCC will provide reasons for the refusal, and you may need to explore other options, such as leaving Canada or applying for restoration of status.
  7. Plan Accordingly:
    • Once your study permit extension is approved, take note of the new expiration date and make any necessary arrangements regarding housing, finances, and academic commitments.
    • Ensure that you have valid health insurance coverage for the duration of your extended stay in Canada.
By following these steps and meeting all requirements, you can successfully extend your study permit in Canada and continue your academic pursuits in the country.
